Akanke is an African American women’s support group that seeks to educate, inform, and unify Black women at the University of California at Santa Barbara by addressing current and critical issues that pertain to women of color. This group serves as an outlet for the awareness of events and issues occurring in the Black community. It also serves as an environment that fosters sisterhood and self-awareness. We consider Akanke to be the foundation for African American women on the UCSB campus. We serve as a larger part of the community such as BSU, BPRO, and other Black organizations. Akanke strives to promote sisterhood and outreach to the greater community through volunteering and community service. Not only are they committed to social support of one another as sisters, but to our own personal growth and development as well. Akanke meets weekly at the AdCRC.
