March 1991 Students erupt in anger upon learning of the verdict in the Rodney King case. An all-white jury found several white policemen innocent of beating King nearly to death, despite a video featuring the beating in full. Newly-elected AS President and AS staffer, Aaron Jones, leads a march of 1,000 UCSB students through the streets of IV. November 6, 1991 350 students attended a BSU meeting at Brioda Hall to express outrage at the IV police department for their racist and physically aggressive attack on Black students at the Acanconda Theaters “After Hours” dance. BSU rep-at-large Brian Macon and 100 Black Men’s Group Rayshaun Grimes presented a "Statement of Facts" about the incident. 1995 First year of Black Interest Hall at Santa Rosa Residence Hall. The Resident Assistant was Tavio Lucas. October 12, 1995 400 UCSB students attend a demonstration at Storke Plaza to support the restoration of Affirmative Action. May 20, 1998 Black student organization 100 College Black Men, hosted their annual 4 day high school outreach program. The program consisted of a dinner at Ortega, a movie, and a discussion at the Multi-Cultural Center facilitated by Professor Cedric J. Robinson. The second day consisted of a workshop titled: Hip Hop Music versus Maat, which aimed to get high school students to redefine what it means to be a healthy African American. Participants in the program were exposed to university courses by shadowing their hosts to classes. 1998 The year marking the 30th anniversary of the Department of Black Studies, UCSB participated in a UC-wide two-day walkout to protest anti-affirmative action legislation and a proposal by University of California Regent, Ward Connerly, to eliminate ethnic studies programs. 1,500 students marched to Cheadle Hall where 200 took over the 5th floor, including Chancellor Henry T. Yang’s office. The students presented Yang with a list of nine demands and, although he does not have authority to implement some of them, he does publicly speak in support of the list and, at the next meeting of the UC Regents, of ethnic and gender studies programs. |
