March 6, 2013 The Black Student Union and the A.S. UCSB Student Advocate General Yoel Haile sent out a press release and press advisory to the public. The press release was sent to over 50 newspapers, all the BSUs throughout the UC system and publicized through social media outlets such as facebook. The press release articulated BSU's demands and stated that the first BSU spring quarter meeting to be held on April 2nd would be dedicated to discussing the demands with Chancellor Yang and updates. June 7, 2013 After nearly an entire school year campaign and deliberation with UCSB administrators, the UCSB Black Student Union got Chancellor Henry T. Yang to agree to all but one of their demands. During the press conference, student leaders spoke about the on-going deliberations with UCSB administrators to get the various demands met. December 1, 2014 UCSB Community holds "Hands Up, Walk Out" gathering at Storke tower. In response to the non-indictment in the killing of Mike Brown and the senseless killings of Akai Gurley in New York, and 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, students called for the community to walk out of their schools and places of work in solidarity with Ferguson communities across the country effected by police violence. July 13, 2017 UCSB BSU Organizes ‘Drop the Charges’ Protest in response to arrest of 5 Black Students near UC Merced. According to organizers, the students who were arrested are all family members, and attended UC Merced, Laney College, Diablo Valley College, Merritt College and Bethany College. |
